Beeswax Painting

These pieces are beautifully hand-drawn on handwoven hemp by talented H'mong women artisans in northern Vietnam. The designs they create showcase their daily life, religion, and culture. With incredible skill and creativity, they craft works of art that are truly timeless.

The process they use is fascinating. To apply the beeswax, they use a special tool called a tjanting. It's a simple little bamboo stick, about 7cm long, with a tiny triangular copper tip. The finer the tip, the more intricate and beautiful the designs can be. The artist sits by the fire, dipping the tjanting into a pan of hot beeswax (kept warm on glowing coals) and then carefully draws lines on the fabric. It takes a steady hand – they have to make sure the wax flows smoothly and evenly, without any blobs, until the line is complete. Then, they dip the tjanting again and continue the design. Once the drawing is finished, the fabric is boiled to remove the wax, revealing the gorgeous patterns underneath.
