Description

Our handmade linen scarves feature unique H'mong designs created using a traditional batik wax technique. This ancient method has been passed down through generations, making the patterns on the fabric like a living history book, telling stories of highland life from the past to today.

To apply the beeswax, they use a tool called a tjanting.  It's basically a small, 7 cm-long bamboo stick with a tiny triangular copper tip. The finer the tip, the more intricate and beautiful the designs. The artist sits by the fire, dipping the tjanting into a pan of hot beeswax kept warm on glowing coals, and then carefully draws lines on the fabric. They have to make sure the wax flows smoothly without any blobs until the line is finished, then they dip the tjanting again and keep going. Once the designs are complete, the fabric is boiled to remove the wax, revealing the beautiful patterns.  After boiling, the fabric is dyed in indigo and then left to dry in the sun.
